1) The following is a video display of how the 3-Ring Binder is organized:
Summary of 3-Ring Binder organization:
a) Four Dividers: SCIENCE, ASSESSMENT, WORK, and LABORATORY
b) One Folder: For carrying "work-in-progress" and materials to be turned in for credit.
c) Binder should have loose-leaf paper to click out for assignments.
d) Reference materials (e.g. Syllabus) filed in SCIENCE section; other materials filed in their respective sections.
e) Binder is tool which should assist student in staying organized throughout the school year.

2)Having fun and bringing science to life with relevant lab activities, such as the pGLO experiment.

During the school year students will have the chance to participate in a plethora of interesting, relevant, and informative lab activities, such as the one following which is briefly presented:
Scenario:
Students find a meteorite which has crash landed in the field of our school.
Local authorities suspect that the meteorite contains killer alien microbes sent by inhabitants of the hostile Planet Jell-O and have asked our school to investigate.
Inhabitants of Planet Jell-O look surprisingly like the bioluminescent species of jellyfish, named Aequorea victoria (pictured at left), which are found in the ocean of Planet Earth. Medical scientists hypothesize that the “microbes” of the meteorite are in fact plasmids with some very unique transforming properties.

Student Mission:

The alien plasmids are able to transform some types of ordinary Earth bacteria. Organisms ingesting these transformants turn into Jellyfish creatures!
Earthlings which are transformed into glowing Jellyfish creatures will obey the commands of the alien invaders from Planet Jell-O.
Students will conduct experiments to figure out if the plasmids are TRANSFORMER genetic material vectors containing the Green Fluorescent Protein sequence.
Students will use Bio-Rad’s Biotechnology Explorer : pGlo Bacterial Transformation Kit to explore whether the plasmids are in fact vectors sent from Planet Jell-O.

Making connections to real life here on the blue planet:

Scientific Fact:
The Earth is hit by meteorites on a daily basis!
Hopefully RFK science students will have the opportunity to take a trip to the American Museum of Natural History to see a piece of the Murchison Meteorite, which hit Earth billions of years ago and which contains amino acids from outer space; amino acids are the building blocks of life on Earth.
